The Office of the Health Ombudsman (OHO) has continued in its commitment to thoroughly investigate complaints, resolve health service concerns and protect the health and safety of Queenslanders.
August performance data shows the OHO completed 110 local resolutions in August. Not only was this the highest number completed in a single month since commencing in July 2014 but, by working closely with complainants and providers, the OHO resolved 94 per cent of these matters.
A focus on investigations started by other agencies before being transferred to the OHO has contributed to 26 investigations being closed in August, also the highest number completed in any month so far. This focus on addressing older investigations transferred to the OHO from other agencies is reflected in the fact that more than 40 per cent of the investigations closed during the month were over 12 months old.
“These are strong results and clearly reflect the OHO’s commitment to delivering timeliness and quality in the management of health service complaints,” said Acting Health Ombudsman Mr Andrew Brown.
In addition, immediate registration action was taken against two health practitioners, and interim prohibition orders were issued against three health practitioners during August.
“Temporarily suspending or placing conditions upon a practitioner until a full investigation has been carried out not only protects the health and safety of the public, but sends the message that serious misconduct will not be tolerated among health practitioners in Queensland,” said Mr Brown.
“Enforcing health service restrictions in these serious circumstances ensures the public is protected from the possibility of recurring offences,” said Mr Brown.
